Do you play any other character(s) on Reborn? : Yi Xiang
Name: Takayama Mai
Alias: N/A
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Height: 5'5"
Weight: 130 lbs
DoB: May 5th
Village: Kirigakure
Chakra Nature: Wind, Water (not yet learned)
Rank: Chuunin
Position: Apprentice to the 7 Swordsmen, studying to inherit the Nuibari (Needle)
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Special Abilities: N/A
Fighting Style: As befitting of her weapon, and the weapon she seeks to inherit, Mai is a very swift fighter, and practiced in accurate throwing as well as melee combat. However, aside from the chakra-based abilities of her weapon, she has little in the way of offensive jutsu for her rank, instead choosing to focus on her kenjutsu, taijutsu, and genjutsu. She generally doesn't plan very far ahead in combat, instead choosing to adjust her tactics as the battle continues in an attempt to avoid focusing too much on a specific outcome or trick.
Weaknesses: Due to her lacking focus on combative ninjutsu, Mai is very weak at long range combat, meaning that anyone who can keep a good distance from her has an advantage. Since she focuses on dodging melee strikes, her blocking ability there is weaker than normal kenjutsu users. As is normal with genjutsu, hers can be broken by anyone trained sufficiently against them.[/ul]
Appearance:
Mai stands at roughly 5'5", and weighs 130 lbs. Her hair is dark blue, her eyes golden yellow, and a scar crosses her nose from cheek to cheek, healed but not faded. Her skin is fair, but not especially pale, and her hair cut in a moderately short manner. As with others tied to the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, her teeth have been sharpened. Mai frequently wears a dark blue vest over a black, long-sleeved shirt and black pants, with black shoes and a blue belt. The belt holds a tool bag on her right hip, while her vest pockets carry one book on each side, and her weapon sits on her belt, in the back.
Personality: Mai enjoys combat, preferring melee or hand-to-hand combat over ninjutsu- and genjutsu-based combat, though even those can be entertaining. Even a loss can be fun, if nothing important is on the line. Fighting is probably her favorite way to pass time, though some would be surprised to hear that she draws and writes while resting, or healing from particularly rough battles, being the author of an amateur manga that comes out with chapters weekly. She doesn't talk about this much, though, doing it mostly as a hobby.
Even with her love of combat, however, Mai stands firmly loyal to her village, and the people in it. She knows the pain of losing people you care for, and knowing this, she hopes to prove herself better than the Swordsmen of the past, who chose to abandon their village or rebel against it. This loyalty is something that will probably keep her from turning traitor herself in search of a good fight, unless the village betrays her, or she's forced to one way or another. Relatedly, betrayal is something especially offensive to her.
Despite her love of combat, she doesn't usually come across as especially hot-blooded, instead being fairly calm and level-headed when she's not fighting. She enjoys taking time to hang out with her fellow ninja, and likes listening to the stories behind their missions and tactics. Of course, when it comes to hearing combat stories, she prefers learning more about the Seven Shinobi Swordsmen, given her dream.
Oh, and about that manga Mai writes? The title is A Shinobi's Red String, a story mixing romantic comedy with the lifestyle and action of ninja. The main character, Mizuhara Akane, is the focal point of a love triangle between her and her two teammates, Takeba Ryuuji and Morino Kensuke. Their sensei, Fujiba Kurama, serves as a mentor and a moral compass for each, while other forces get tangled into the already messy affair, or try to force a resolution of their choosing. The manga takes very little from Mai's own life and experience, to avoid giving away information about Kirigakure.
History: Mai was born into a time of peace, and for a good portion of her childhood, she was raised in what some would call the brightest period Kirigakure had experienced in ages. However, peaceful times don't last forever, as she learned when the Fourth Shinobi War came to pass. Many died in the war, from all villages. Friends, acquaintances, teachers, and family. Mai lost her mother and older brother in the battles, and even when her father came back home, nothing was really the same.
One day, when young Mai was walking around the house while her father was doing another mission for the village, she snuck into her father's room, and read the small journal he'd kept about the war. One thing that caught her attention was the descriptions of each of the previous Seven Shinobi Swordsmen and their weapons. The Nuibari reminded her of a weapon she'd seen her brother practicing with one day, a dagger connected to a chain. Upon asking her father about the connection, he told her that her brother, Takayama Ryuunosuke, had been training to join the incarnation of the Swordsmen active at the time of the War, with a weapon that Ryuunosuke and their father had created together to try to replace the Nuibari. Now that the Needle was back in Kirigakure's hands, the weapon would work as a training tool, or a back-up if the Needle was lost or destroyed, or simply wasn't the best option for the battle at hand.
Mai thought about this information for some time after, and as she trained in the Academy, she took an interest in the Swordsmen as well, having the most fun while learning weapon-based combat. Eventually, she decided to take up her brother's dream, to join the Swordsmen, and dedicated most of her training to learning how to use the weapon her family created, as well as jutsu suited to the Seven's tactics.
After she graduated, Mai ended up spending a smaller amount of time with her team than most, due to her training regiment. She'd managed to stand out during the graduation exam, and caught the eye of the Swordsmen as a potential successor, using a kunai on a steel cord to substitute for the weapons she would eventually learn to use. Her father began teaching her how to use the Kusarito, which included starting her lessons on chakra natures relatively early, all told. These lessons both helped and hurt the team, since she was able to better protect her team, but she also had trouble synchronizing with them, due to the lacking experience together. Even so, the issue was overcome, and the team applied for the Chuunin exams together, at around 14 or 15 years old.
The team managed to make it through the first exam quite well, but as they were making their way towards the goal of the second, both scrolls in their possession, they were ambushed by a team that had lost theirs the day before. During the ensuing struggle, Mai had to push a teammate out of the way of an attack, and ended up taking the attack herself, breaking her left arm. The others finished the fight, and they hurried to the goal to get a med-nin to take care of Mai.
Mai's fight in the preliminaries was put off until she could get bandaged up, but obviously she didn't have time to heal fully or properly. Her opponent, one of the ambushers from before, took his time, figuring the fight was in the bag since she couldn't even use her favored weapon or much in the way of jutsu with one arm disabled. However, some time in, an idea came to Mai, and she managed to get enough room between them to kick off her shoes, before using one foot to stand in for her broken arm, and barely managed to win the fight with this improvised tactic. Once her fight was done, she was taken away for further examination and treatment.
Mai ended up spending most of the month between the second and third exams on the mend, which is when she started working on ideas and concept art for a manga to pass the time, though her art back then was far from print-worthy. Once she was released, Mai started training as much as she could to enhance her speed and reflexes, as well as her mastery over the Kusarito, working as hard as she could to compensate for the lost time. It was also during this time that she got a memo telling her she'd be accepted as a student of the Swordsmen if she proved herself in the third exam. This notice threw more fuel into the fire of her motivation, and she practically disappeared from public life until the day before the exam itself.
The third exam went fairly well, with trying battles throughout, but in the end, Mai managed to prove herself worthy of both her promotion, and the official recognition of the Swordsmen, the first true step towards achieving her dream. After this, however, she had even less time to spend with her old team, each going into different divisions of the village's ninja society, though they do try to keep in touch once in a while.
Since Mai's promotion, missions have come and gone, but one particular mission stands out in her memory, when she got her scar. In the days before Terumi had taken over has Mizukage, the village had been in conflict with many of the other villages, and a large number of ninja bore a grudge from this time, defecting from the grand ninja army rather than cooperating with the village that had wronged them so. At the time, the villages had to dedicate all their resources to the war, so this desertation couldn't be dealt with in a timely fashion, and by the war's end the traitors had already escaped. In the years since, they had met up, and gathered resources and wealth necessary to try and attack Kirigakure themselves.
Now, ten years after the war, that plan had come to fruition, and Mai was part of the force sent to oppose these renegade ninja. The battle itself was fairly straightforward, with the Kiri forces setting an ambush after learning the route that the enemy would take from a spy. Mai herself ended up facing one of the leaders, Hatsune Kaoru, and the two ended up getting separated from the others, with Kaoru running to the cavern the renegades had used for a base the night before. It was there that they fought, blade against blade, until Mai found an opening and threw the Kusarito, piercing through Kaoru's knee and digging into the stone wall behind him. Mai jerked the chain to one side, pulling his leg out from under him as he cried in pain.
As Mai moved in to knock Kaoru out and capture him, he slashed at her with his katana, cutting across her face in an attempt to kill her, declaring he'd rather die than be taken captive by her village. Mai sighed, and granted his wish, pulling her weapon out of his leg forcibly and leaving him surrounded by explosive tags, which killed him and caused a cave-in as she left, burying his corpse beneath the stone. The rest of the forces had successfully repelled the invasion, though a substantial number of the enemy had escaped to menace Kirigakure in the future.
Missions continue to come and go, and Mai's talents in drawing and writing her manga have improved, as have her talents and techniques as a ninja. Every day, she comes just a little closer to her dream's success.
